About LPN Programs in Tennessee

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) training is typically a 12-month program offered through Tennessee Colleges of Applied Technology. The curriculum includes both classroom instruction and clinical practice in healthcare settings.

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX-PN (National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses) to obtain their LPN license.

What LPNs Do

LPNs provide basic nursing care under the supervision of registered nurses and physicians. Their duties typically include:

  • Monitoring patients' health, including checking blood pressure and other vital signs
  • Administering basic patient care, including changing bandages and inserting catheters
  • Providing for the basic comfort of patients, such as helping them bathe or dress
  • Discussing the care they are providing with patients and listening to their concerns
  • Reporting the status of patients to registered nurses and doctors
  • Keeping records on patients' health and care

Career Advancement

Many LPNs choose to further their education by enrolling in LPN-to-RN bridge programs offered at various Tennessee colleges and universities. These programs allow LPNs to build upon their existing education and clinical experience to earn an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) and become eligible to take the NCLEX-RN exam.
