Nursing Salaries

Nursing salary ranges depend upon region of the country, type of education and experience, type of facility and job description. Facility size is a major factor in nursing salaries -- the larger the facilities and number and types of beds (ICU, med-surg, etc.) the higher the salary. Over the past few years, although nursing salaries have risen across the board, the largest increases have been for experienced nurses. Based on Bureau of Labor statistics, the figures listed below are the national (May 2005) and Tennessee average nursing salaries earned in 2006. LPN

The national average annual earnings of LPNs was $36,210 with the salaries varying by practice area: nursing care facillity - $37,5700; hospitals - $34,640 ; physician office/clinic - $32,500; home care - $37,810; and employment agency - $42,250. (May 2005)

In Tennessee, the average annual earnings for LPNs was $31,530 in 2006.
RN

The national average annual earnings of RNs was $56.880 with the salaries varying by practice area: hospitals - $57,820; nursing care facillity - $51,510; physician office/clinic - $56,230; home care - $54,550; and employment agency - $64,720. (May 2005)

In Tennessee, the average annual earnings for RNs was $51,245 in 2006.

Educational Considerations

According to the HotJobs.com, in 2007 hospital staff nurses in the United States earned an average of $59,061 yet with some additional education, nurses can increase their earning potential. Some examples of roles that generally require education beyond the basic level include: Clinical Nurse Specialists averaged $76,209; Nurse Anethesists averaged $134,820; Nurse Practitioners averaged $77,886; Head Nurses averaged $80,824; Nurse Educators (hospital-based) averaged $67,142; Nursing Faculty averaged $62,743; Nursing Supervisors averaaged $71,000; and Chief Nursing Officers averaged $167,387.
